Professor Alan Ford studied in Trinity College Dublin and St John's College Cambridge, on his way to his current post at the University of Nottingham.
His most recent major research project was a biography of James Ussher, the early 17th century Irish scholar and archbishop.
He is also in his third year as the university's Dean of the Faculty of Arts.
